Where is Kitsilano?

Kitsilano is a neighborhood in Vancouver, BC that is locally known as "Kits". It's bordered to the west by Alma, to the east by Burrard, to the south by 16th and to the north by the waters of English Bay.

Aside from it's beaches, Kitsilano is also home to two distinct commercial districts. One runs along W.4th Ave between Burrard and Balsam, while the other runs along W. Broadway between Macdonald and Alma.

Living in Kitsilano

It's hard to imagine that a century ago Kitsilano was just an outpost to the burgeoning city of Vancouver. Known originally to locals as 'Greer's Beach' it wasn't until the interurban line to Richmond was built in the 1890s that Kitsilano came to be within easy reach.

Relatively inexpensive, the community was a hotbed for hippie culture in the 1960s. However, as Vancouver grew so did the attraction of its residents to Kitsilano. The beauty and convenience of Kitsilano couldn't be kept secret forever and it has now long been gentrified.

Today, you can still find remnants of Kitsilanos hippie, counterculture past. However, it's now a densely populated and extremely popular neighborhood that's home to a diverse group of residents. From students, to families, to young professionals the majority of residents are attractive, healthy and under 40.
